A logarithmic fourth-order parabolic equation and related logarithmic Sobolev inequalities

2006

A logarithmic fourth-order parabolic equation in one space dimension with periodic boundary conditions is studied. This equation arises in the context of fluctuations of a stationary nonequilibrium interface and in the modeling of quantum semiconductor devices. The existence of global-in-time non-negative weak solutions and some regularity results are shown. Furthermore, we prove that the solution converges exponentially fast to its mean value in the ``entropy norm'' and in the Fisher information, using a new optimal logarithmic Sobolev inequality for higher derivatives. In particular, the rate is independent of the solution and the constant depends only on the initial value of the entropy.

Symmetry breaking in a constrained cheeger type isoperimetric inequality

2015

We study the optimal constant in a Sobolev inequality for BV functions with zero mean value and vanishing outside a bounded open set. We are interested in finding the best possible embedding constant in terms of the measure of the domain alone. We set up an optimal shape problem and we completely characterize the behavior of optimal domains.

Characterization of ellipsoids through an overdetermined boundary value problem of Monge–Ampère type

2014

Abstract The study of the optimal constant in an Hessian-type Sobolev inequality leads to a fully nonlinear boundary value problem, overdetermined with non-standard boundary conditions. We show that all the solutions have ellipsoidal symmetry. In the proof we use the maximum principle applied to a suitable auxiliary function in conjunction with an entropy estimate from affine curvature flow.

Limits of Sobolev homeomorphisms

2017

Let X; Y subset of R-2 be topologically equivalent bounded Lipschitz domains. We prove that weak and strong limits of homeomorphisms h: X (onto)-> Y in the Sobolev space W-1,W-p (X, R-2), p >= 2; are the same. As an application, we establish the existence of 2D-traction free minimal deformations for fairly general energy integrals. Peer reviewed

Sobolev embeddings, extensions and measure density condition

2008

AbstractThere are two main results in the paper. In the first one, Theorem 1, we prove that if the Sobolev embedding theorem holds in Ω, in any of all the possible cases, then Ω satisfies the measure density condition. The second main result, Theorem 5, provides several characterizations of the Wm,p-extension domains for 1<p<∞. As a corollary we prove that the property of being a W1,p-extension domain, 1<p⩽∞, is invariant under bi-Lipschitz mappings, Theorem 8.

Sobolev classes of Banach space-valued functions and quasiconformal mappings

2001

We give a definition for the class of Sobolev functions from a metric measure space into a Banach space. We give various characterizations of Sobolev classes and study the absolute continuity in measure of Sobolev mappings in the “borderline case”. We show under rather weak assumptions on the source space that quasisymmetric homeomorphisms belong to a Sobolev space of borderline degree; in particular, they are absolutely continuous. This leads to an analytic characterization of quasiconformal mappings between Ahlfors regular Loewner spaces akin to the classical Euclidean situation. As a consequence, we deduce that quasisymmetric maps respect the Cheeger differentials of Lipschitz functions …

Maximal function estimates and self-improvement results for Poincaré inequalities

2018

Our main result is an estimate for a sharp maximal function, which implies a Keith–Zhong type self-improvement property of Poincaré inequalities related to differentiable structures on metric measure spaces. As an application, we give structure independent representation for Sobolev norms and universality results for Sobolev spaces. peerReviewed

On the continuity of discrete maximal operators in Sobolev spaces

2014

We investigate the continuity of discrete maximal operators in Sobolev space W 1;p (R n ). A counterexample is given as well as it is shown that the continuity follows under certain sucient assumptions. Especially, our research verifies that for the continuity in Sobolev spaces the role of the partition of the unity used in the construction of the maximal operator is very delicate.

Extensions and Imbeddings

1998

AbstractWe establish a connection between the Sobolev imbedding theorem and the extendability of Sobolev functions. As applications we give geometric criteria for extendability and give a result on the dependence of the extension property on the exponentp.
